Questions That Make You Think

Important questions to ask yourself in 2014.

I’ve had some health issues in good ole 2013 that have consumed my body and my mind. They are nothing serious, as in life-threatening serious. But, they’ve been serious in that they’ve interrupted my life in a significant way and that has not been fun for me – or anyone around me.

To be clear, my problems, as compared to so many suffering with “real” problems, are nothing. But they’re mine and therein lie my deep thoughts. 🙂

Meanwhile, I’ve been all kinds of introspective lately, especially as we move into the new year. I’m totally thinking about the meaning of life and who I love and why,  and whether or not rainbows and unicorns were really created by the Spaghetti Monster. Yeah. I’m asking myself questions that make me think… and now I’m asking questions (and sharing quotes) that make YOU think

Somebody pull me back in the shallow water.

How to Get the Best Christmas Deals Online {15 websites I use every year.}

There are certainly women (and men) who are way better at sniffing out the best Christmas deals online each year than I am. But, I’m not gonna kid you. I snag some sweet deals every single Christmas shopping season.

I love Christmas so, so much. But, I’m not a girl who really likes to go into stores and malls shopping for Christmas. Not only do the crowds kind of freak me out, but I can’t seem to get the best Christmas deals in stores as compared to online. I think it’s because online, I can be a lot more thoughtful about what I spend and whether it’s the best value I can find.

Today, I’m sharing 15 of the best (in my opinion) websites to get crazy sweet Christmas shopping deals. If you have favorites I haven’t listed, please share! I’m always looking for more ways to save money!

PS: Read my (unique & honest) affiliate policy here.

Best Christmas Deals Online

1. First of all, I use Ebates as my jumping off point for all my Christmas shopping online. When you click on a store via eBates and you then buy from that store, you get back a certain percentage of what y0u spend – depending upon the offer. Ebates is completely legitimate and used by thousands and thousands of people. During last year’s Christmas season, I got over $60 in cash back. THAT is on top of all the money I saved using the links I’m going to share with you below.

(You can also refer friends to Ebates and you’ll get $10 for each person who signs up and begins using the site. If you sign up via my link, I’ll receive that same deal… and I will definitely appreciate your kindness.)

2. Fat Wallet – Super similar to Ebates in the way it works, I haven’t used Fat Wallet as much as Ebates, but I know a lot of people who do and I always check to see how it compares to my Ebates money back deals.

3. Slickdeals – I used this website during my Christmas shopping last year and it probably saved me hundreds of dollars. Last Christmas, my most awesome buy was a pair of boots that were crazy discounted! Not only do I check the front page deals, and the popular deals, I’m addicted to their forums. I try to keep a close eye and check every day (or more often) so I don’t miss anything good.

4. Woot – They offer featured deals of the day. From t-shirts to baby stuff to wine and tech – there are all sorts of deals that pop up here. I bought my grandmonkey a pair of Scooby-Doo slippers last year that were super inexpensive.

5. Walmart – You don’t have to walk all over the mass retailer to find a stellar deal. Keep watch on the Walmart Value of the Day and be sure to grab it when you see something you want because when they’re gone, they’re gone.

6. Amazon – I feel like this goes without saying. But, Amazon is hard to beat. They’re fast, reliable, usually have great prices, and I’ve never had an issue with returns. I always keep an eye on the “Today’s Deals” tab and the “Gold Box” during the Christmas shopping season.

7. Hobby Lobby – You can almost always get a 40% off coupon for regular priced items. You can only use it on one item per coupon, but it’s still one heck of a deal. Remember that in addition to craft supplies, Hobby Lobby also has holiday decor, furniture, and other goodies.

8. Kohl’s Goldstar Clearance – I bought so much stuff from Kohl’s last year for Christmas, it’s nuts. I couldn’t help it! The deals were SO great. In addition to Kohl’s Cash (which I love), I bought a lot of things via their Goldstar Clearance.

9. Money Talk News – There are coupons for small things, the occasional freebies, etc. But, I use it to help me shop for Christmas gifts because you can often get the scoop on some great finds.

10. Talkwalker – Last year I used Google Alerts to be notified when something I was shopping for went on sale. I’ve found they are really dropping the ball with their alerts though, so this year it’s all about Talkwalker for me. It’s free to set up alerts on any subject, but they can be super awesome for Christmas shopping. HINT: use very specific search terms and quotes to get really good results… like “PS4 Sale.”

11. BFads – Although I cannot fathom a circumstance that would cause me to go inside a store on Black Friday, BFads.net will let me keep current on all those ONLINE Black Friday dealios.

12. RetailMeNot – I’ve even taught my college kiddo to check this site before he buys anything online. Shipping charges are usually pretty easy to find coupon codes for – so I rarely pay shipping charges during my Christmas shopping.

13. Coupon Cabin – If I can’t find a coupon code on #12, I go here next.

14. Overstock.com – This website makes me salivate. I can almost always find a crazy good deal here on all sorts of things, but jewelry discounts have been my favorite. Always stellar customer service.

15. Drugstore.com – Believe it or not, I can rock some great Christmas deals here! Trust me. Especially since Beauty.com is a part of the site, you can really nab some great prices, cash back, and sales.

Teacher Appreciation Quotes – I love teachers!

i love teachers

I love teachers. I love teachers. I LOVE TEACHERS! My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Butler, told me (in front of the whole class), that my essay about what it would be like to be as tiny as an ant was SO GOOD, that she felt like she was really as tiny as an ant.

“You’re going to be a writer,” she said.

I believed her. And I’ve never been able to STOP writing. That’s mad power. Continue reading “Teacher Appreciation Quotes – I love teachers!”

What the #@% is Wrong With Pinterest?

Is Pinterest Down

Do you ever wonder, “Is Pinterest down…or is it just me? Do you sometimes see pins filling up your Pinterest stream from people you know you haven’t followed? And, what about your own pins? How do you know which ones are really blowing up and which are just laying there like my ex-husband used to do when I would hear imaginary criminals breaking into our house?

Sidebar: Over the course of our marriage there were no less than 1, 352 attempted break-ins by imaginary criminals who sought to a) steal my collection of gently used, spaghetti-stained margarine tubs, b) kidnap me, and c) force me to dress in long, denim skirts and wear my hair teased so high in the front that an adult armadillo could comfortably take up residence. In my opinion, he should have investigated every single one. Those are the marriage rules. It’s in the Bible. Or on a Snapple lid. Either way.

Meanwhile, back on Momcaster…

Should you ever find yourself gently weeping onto your keyboard wondering, “What the #@% is Wrong With Pinterest?”, I’ve got some answers for you. If you ever find yourself wondering what is wrong with your husband, I’ve REALLY got some answers for you. See me after class.

Having some minor Pinterest frustrations? Here are the answers to some of your most wondered about questions. :-)

1. Where do I go when there are bugs in my Pinterest Kool-Aid?

You can check Is It Down Right Now? – You can take a look at the Pinterest server status, website status, and get troubleshooting ideas. It’s a handy tool for lots of websites actually, so keep this one bookmarked. (They are not affiliated with Pinterest.)

Take a look at the Pinterest Help Center –  To be candid, I’ve not always found this particularly helpful. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth a look when you start to have problems on Pinterest. It just seems to me like it’s a little slow to update about known issues and when I’ve submitted a help ticket in the past, I never received any kind of notice that the bug was fixed.  Despite all that, you should try here first when you experience a Pinterest issue. * You can also report a bug you find on Pinterest here.

By the way, a common Pinterest issue users have is not seeing any images below the Pinterest header. It could be you don’t have javascript enabled, in which case Yahoo can help you fix it. If it’s a problem with your browser, Pinterest will help you troubleshoot.

2. Why am I seeing people (and sometimes spammers) I didn’t follow in my Pinterest home feed?

This one drove me nuts until I finally figured out the culprit. It was GROUP BOARDS I followed!

I love group boards for lots of reasons. But, following a group board means you are sometimes going to see pins from pinners you don’t know and didn’t follow.

When a group board gets to be pretty large, it’s impossible for the person who originally created it to patrol it for spam. Pinterest says, “When you follow a group board, you will see all the pins being added to this group board, regardless of the person who is pinning the items. This means you might see pins from people you are not following.”

YOU can help moderate those boards, and help all of us who love Pinterest, by reporting Pinterest spammers. It’s simple, fast and Pinterest will teach you how to report spammers here.

3. How do I know who is pinning what, and which of my pins are really blowing up?

Pinterest offers analytics to business users and at no cost. Here’s what you’ll need to do to get them.

I personally use a different tool to really dig in and see what’s happening with my pins. It’s called Tailwind and it’s incredible. Not only can I see what’s happening with my pins and followers, I can take a look at what’s happening with my competitors’ pins and followers. There are so many wonderful chunks of incredible data to be mined using this tool, but gun to head I’d have to say my favorite is the “Fans & Influencers” info.

I realized very quickly that I have some amazing brand advocates on Pinterest for many of my blogs, and I wasn’t even following them! Can you believe it? I fixed that right away and I make sure I re-pin their “stuff” to share my appreciation and pin-love with them.

4. I’m getting too many emails from Pinterest. How do I turn them off?

I hear you sister. If I received an email every time someone re-pinned something or followed one of my boards, I’d pin a picture of me jumping off a bridge!  Here you go…  how to turn off Pinterest notifications.

These are just a few frustrating Pinterest questions I had and hope I’ve now answered for you. But, you’re so kind to read all the way to the end, I want to leave you with my favorite must-follow Pinterest resource. And before you go, please comment to share the link to YOUR Pinterest profile so I can follow! I love finding new people on Pinterest!

Day is Done, Gone the Sun

memorial day

Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

memorial day

Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light;
And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
‘Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
‘Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

Nurse Quotes for National Nurses Week

National Nurse’s Week is May 6th through May 12th. It’s a time to stop for a moment and think about the men and women who care for us when we are at our weakest. Virtually every one of us can think of a time – or several –  a nurse made us feel a little better when we were broken. Nurses do a job that absolutely amazes me, and my tiny, tiny way of saying thank you during this National Nurses Week was to make a few image quotes about nurses we can share with those nurses we love.

7 Pinworthy Image Quotes and Sayings

image quotes and sayings

So I decided to make some image quotes and sayings because like so many others, I totally love them. Why? I don’t know really. There is just something about seeing an image of a quote or saying on Facebook or Pinterest that can sort of make my day, or get me thinking, or crack me up.

If you love them, feel free to share them. All were made by little ole me, but I sure can’t take credit for the quotes or sayings. I’m not that awesome. 🙂

7 Pinworthy Image Quotes & Sayings

1. “If you don’t like something, change it.” Wise, right? Can you imagine what life would be like if we really lived by these words? Wait… I think I kind of have. That’s why I’ve been divorced so many times.

image quotes and sayings

2. This is honestly my fondest hope and desire. To be better tomorrow than I was today. (And also to have my very own monkey.)

image quotes and sayings

3.  Even if you’re a pretend fire baton twirler who tells everyone you can tap dance when you really can’t… be a good pretend, fake tap-dancer.

image quotes and sayings

4. This image quote is harsh, but true, right? I’d rather you tell me my skirt is stuck in my underwear than tell me how pretty my shoes are.

image quotes and sayings
5. You know it’s true. If I could go back and tell my 20 year old self one thing, this would be the thing.

image quotes and sayings

6. Speaking of what I’d tell my younger self, this is what I’d tell me 21 year old self. 🙂

image quotes and sayings

7. And finally, given all that is happening in the US and around the world, I find it best to keep this in mind – lest I go crazy.

image quotes and sayings

If ya love ’em, pin ’em or Facebook ’em or glue them all over your neighbor’s deck. And if you want more, let me know and I’ll make you some more. 🙂

Super Sexy Blonde Highlights

blonde hair highlights

Blonde highlights saved my life. Okay – I’ll admit that’s completely dramatic. But, c’mon. Without blonde highlights I would have flat brown hair and I would look at least 95 years old. I wouldn’t have had nearly as many husbands either! 🙂

I’m always looking for inspiration, and Google is happy to provide me with lots of examples of super pretty blonde highlights.

 7 Super Sexy Blonde Highlights

I love Kristin Cavallari’s blonde highlights in this photo. Very heavy blonde, with lots of warm shades.

How does Jennifer Anniston’s hair always look so perfect? I’m guessing either magical hair fairies or an endless wad of cash to hire the best people to make it happen. I am in love with these blonde highlights…even if a magic hair fairy did them while she slept.

If I get caramel highlights in my hair, I’m almost positive I will look exactly like Eva Mendes. I’ll try not to stand near her so people won’t be confused by our equally beautiful selves.

The difference in Nicole Richie’s hair is pretty dramatic in this photo and I almost think I love the red and blonde highlights. Am I a little worried I would resemble Raggedy Ann with red and blonde highlights? I am… just a little bit.

I am mad for the highlights and low lights on this model. I think they’re the perfect combination of subtle and HOLY HELL!!!  That’s a hard line to walk.

These big, chunky blonde highights mixed with chunky red highlights is kind of fun, right? Very dramatic.

Kate Bekinsale would be gorgeous no matter if she shaved her heard and caked on green eyeshadow. She’s one of those natural beauties who can’t do any wrong. Her highlights are subtle and sexy and very “girl next door.”
