How to Make a Pinecone Turkey
Pinecone turkeys are an excellent decorating option for fall and Thanksgiving. They are colorful and cute and can be made easily. Another plus of the craft is that it encourages little ones to venture outdoors to collect the pinecones. They are also welcome to do the project, provided an adult is always there by their side to supervise.
Pinecone Turkeys with Feathers: Step by Step Guide
What You Need
- Pinecones
- Colorful feathers
- Large orange pom poms
- Red and yellow foam paper
- Googly eyes
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Glue sticks
Instructions
- After selecting the pinecones that you think will suit your craft, wash them to remove dirt and other debris. Set them aside to dry.
- Once completely dry, you can bake them at 200°F in an oven for 20-30 minutes on a lined baking sheet.
- Allow them to cool
[N.B. The previous 2 steps are optional but are highly recommended if you don’t want to bring bugs inside your home. But you can always skip them if you are working with craft pine cones]
- Turn a pine cone to its side
- Insert the feathers into the scales located near the base (or the broader end) of the pinecone [N.B. There’s no need to use glue, but you can do so if you want a more secure attachment]
- Continue adding as many feathers as you like.
- Use a hot glue gun to attach a large orange pom pom to the pointiest end or top of a pinecone. You can break off the stem of the pinecone with your hand to make it stick better
- Cut a waddle and beak out of the foam sheets of paper.
- Attach the googly eyes, waddle and beak to the pom pom
- Repeat the steps for the other pinecones
We are sure that little ones will be delighted at how the pinecone turkeys turn out. We really love the homemade little birds with a lot of feathers on their tail. If you can’t find real feathers, faux feathers work as well. Or, just cut feather shapes out of colored cardstock. Once done, your DIY feathered friend can be the crowd puller at a Thanksgiving dinner hosted by you.
